A NEW LIFE

The light is failing, not because of a dying star. Our sun still powers volcanoes, even on planets more distant than ours. Yet, even at noon, shadows, Leviathan, cast its reach into the distant future. And eyes, bleary, mirror this bleak world. But bleaker still are the desolate souls behind the stares.

You, under the shadowy cloak, wake up, wake up! A portent has come from your Lord, a cure for your ailing heart, a guide, and a mercy. You are no longer dead. You have risen! So, take the lamp, and walk amongst the people. (10:57 & 6:122)

The Prophet (s)

SOUL TALK

The tongue will be moistened by that which populates the heart. But sometimes it acts independently, uttering empty words, sentiments alien to its core.

It is the Islamic month of Rabi al-Awwal, the month of the Prophet’s birth, and mosques echo with eulogies for Muhammad (s). We recite poetry in which we laud, praise and profess our undying love for him (s). But may it be that our tongues and hearts are worlds apart. That our melodious tributes may die before reaching our hearts, just as music falls silently on the ears of the deaf?

When the tongue and heart are misaligned, they cause a schism in the psyche, a fracture of sorts, ethical disharmony, a denaturing of the self.

To reharmonise our heart and tongue, we must return to nature. We do so by reorienting ourselves to the true essence of our Muslim identity: aligning our will to God’s, the source of all that is pure.

This world is bleeding for prophetic paragons, humans synchronised with the Divine. When we are in lock step with God, we will shed our human proclivities, avert a world that seduces us towards a nafsi one, and assume as the Prophet (s) did, an ummati comportment, one in which the people of the world can bask in the light we emit.

Reclaiming Human Nature

We are suffering from fitrah deficit disorder. Thus, we must reorder the self by aligning it to the Divine Will.

This deficit has supplanted our nature, and reorienting ourselves to the Quranic worldview and the Prophetic paradigm allows us to recover our authentic selves.

This idea is not dissimilar to the spirit of reversion. Conversion means changing into something new. But for reverts, this is not what’s happening. For them, it is a reclamation of their primordial and original selves.
