BOUNDLESS GRACE

Humanity is in absolute need of God.

No one who has ever existed can compute God’s favours. From our physical and social sustenance to our intellectual, emotional and spiritual nourishment, the most crucial of God’s favours are His mercy and forgiveness, for they are the keys to our eternal lives.

Remember to count your blessings, then count some more. Then, in gratitude to your Creator, spread forgiveness and mercy to His creation. And every time you do, you expand your grace upon the world, too.

LET THE CHILDREN PLAY

Let them play and let them read.

Our mission at Red Kufi Books is not only to produce quality literature but to restore the love of reading to our communities, beginning with the pre-mother and intrauterine child.

We Love Ramadan is the second book in the ‘We Love’ five-book series, focusing on the pillars of faith. The first book was We Love to Play Pray, which is about salah.

The series introduces Islamic concepts to children in a fun, natural, playful, and organic way. There is no fiqh or dogma, just storytelling.

The five pillars of submission are the base, the primer upon which every Muslim must build their lives.

The Arkānūl Islāmī Khamsah, along with the articles of faith, is the essence of what it means to be a Muslim.

Thus, it is every parent’s responsibility to cultivate these principles in their children’s developmental process. Teaching them by rote is the least we can do. But more importantly, parents must nurture Allah’s base with love and care. Hence, we at Red Kufi Books decided to create the ‘We Love’ series.

Unconditional love is every child’s most urgent need. And reading to a child daily with emotion, enjoyment, and care is one of the deepest forms of love a parent can offer their child.

Children learn best through storytelling and play. This statement is absolutely true.

Allah said, ‘Iqra,’ and the Prophet (s) said, ‘Children must play until the age of seven.’ This prophetic tradition proves the essential nature of play in child development. Furthermore, this hadith implicitly instructs parents to provide a happy, playful, and stress-free environment for their children.

The hadith’s takeaway: play is more important than cognition.

The science now tells us the same thing. Play for children is more important than cognition and is essential for healthy child development.

So too is reading, beginning with parents reading to their children.

Neuropsychologist Natasha Khazanov says, ‘We are born not knowing who we are. We don’t know how to think, only how to feel. It is through our feelings that how we are raised creates the trajectory for our future lives.’

We are all born in a state of fitrah (purity). It is our parents who make us Muslim, Christian, Majusi (fire worshipper), or whatever worldview they adopt for us.

It is also our parents who determine whether we become readers.

The stakes are exceptionally high during the child’s collective and formative years. A daily reading program drastically lowers it. Reading to your child is one of the best ways to foster healthy emotional, mental, and physical attachment. Parent-child reading helps build emotional attachment before child cognition, and later becomes a powerful determinant of what and how the child thinks when thought becomes possible. Reading is highly undervalued in child development and adulthood, and is the singular most beneficial habit.

Gabor Mate, the famous physician and child trauma specialist, writes in his book The Myth of Normal: ‘Before we develop the capacity to take part in constructing our universe, the world fashions us. By what medium? At the beginning, through the bodies and minds of our parents and their circumstances.’

Remember, children become readers on their parents’ laps.
